By combining the stylized head of the puma with the U initial, designer Manuel Andrade Rodríguez, known affectionately "El Pajarito Andrade," arrived at an adroit and functional solution to a complex problem of graphic design for the UNAM sports emblem.

The modern design in blue and gold, moreover, is easily imprinted on the memory and equally easy to reproduce, so much so that over the years the visage of the PUMA has come to represent the UNAM itself.
