Resolution establishing the University Commission for the
Organization of the Celebrations of the Centennial Anniversary of the Founding of the National Autonomous University of Mexico

With grounds in Articles 1 and 9 of the Organic Act and subsections IX and X of the General Statutes, and:

WHEREAS

The National Autonomous University of Mexico is a decentralized, public corporation of the State devoted to imparting higher education, forming professionals, researchers, university teachers and technicians who are capable of contributing to society; and responsible for organizing and carrying out research, while extending the benefits of culture as widely as possible.

That in April, 1910, Don Justo Sierra tendered, first, the National School of Higher Learning Foundational Act, which would form part of the University, and then, on April 26, the draft project for the founding of the National University.

That over the course of a century, in addition to supporting the development of institutions, the University has contributed to the formation of hundreds of thousands of professionals and illustrious personages in Mexican and Latin American sciences, humanities, culture, technology and the Arts.

That the UNAM has been a major historical protagonist in Mexican political, social, cultural and economic development and, in virtue of this, it is necessary to provide an account of its diverse contributions and the impact it has exerted over the course of a century.

That our country has been studied and transformed in part through the efforts and endeavors of the University, which has served as a vital instrument of social mobility, without which Mexico’s historical, social, economic and cultural development cannot be understood.

That the University has fulfilled the mission defined by Justo Sierra: “to nationalize science and Mexicanize knowledge.”

That in 2010, the UNAM will be 100 years-old, which provides us the opportunity to promote and carry out a series of commemorative activities.

That the commemoration shall be associated to the country’s Bicentennial Independence Celebration and the Centennial Celebration of the Mexican Revolution, since the University has played an important role in both the consolidation of Independence and the enunciation of the social aspirations that have impelled the nation’s development.
