UNAM in Mexican Philately

Philately is the art and science of collecting postage stamps. The Mexican Postal Service’s issuances of commemorative stamps, genuine works of art printed on simple paper rectangles, serve to disseminate milestones of the country’s history.

Because the UNAM is and has been a cornerstone and vital protagonist of national life, it has always provided fertile subject matter for commemorative stamps.

This compilation consists of postage stamps issued over the course of 75 years that allude to important milestones in the life of the university, its contributions to the Nation and the great thinkers who forged its founding and have taught in its halls.

The PRO UNIVERSIDAD stamp issuance of 1934 is especially significant, because proceeds from its sale were allocated to consolidating the university’s autonomy.

In the 160 years of the postal service, this is the only stamp issuance earmarked to fund a specific cause. As such, philately can proudly boast to being a patron of the UNAM.
