The Rector of UNAM serves as the university’s legal representative and President of the Board of Regents. He or she is designated by the University Board of Governors for a term of four years and is eligible to serve an additional four-year term.
To serve as Rector, candidates must be Mexican-born between the ages of 35 and 70. Moreover, they shall hold a university degree and an established track record of at least ten years in teaching and research, earning prestige in their field and the esteem of colleagues as persons of honor and discernment.
